Tristan

After we loaded the bike in the back of my truck, we drove to the nearest grocery store off Clifton Avenue in comfortable silence, the sun having taken a beating on us. It was hard to put my finger on what exactly happened between us today.

He not only shared more of his history with me, he’d also trusted me enough to be in Lake Erie without a life jacket. And when I’d felt myself grow hard against him, I wanted to pull away and act as if nothing happened. But then I heard his breath catch and noticed his flushed cheeks, as if he were as turned on as me. Of course, it could’ve been some sort of primal physical reaction, but damn if I didn’t want to stay there with him for even longer, holding him right up against me. Everyone needed human contact from time to time, and it had been so long since I felt that way with somebody, like I was glowing and vibrating from the inside.

If he’d been too uncomfortable or turned off, I would’ve expected him to pull away from me. Unless he’d felt too vulnerable in the water without a life jacket. Fuck. Had I placed him in a position he didn’t want to be in with me? But by the way he’d briefly glanced my way, first at my eyes and then at my mouth, I’d gotten the impression he craved the closeness as much as I did. Hadn’t he slept in my bed for just that reason?

When West first arrived on the dock, he was freaked by seeing Chris’s family, and they were a bit rattled as well—especially since Sheri immediately noticed my bike. She was always good with details. As I walked them to the parking lot, I explained that I was letting him borrow it for the summer, and didn’t share anything beyond that.

But I could see it plainly in their eyes, and it nearly gutted me—they questioned whether I was moving on, leaving Chris behind, and nothing could be further from the truth. I could never say goodbye to him—he lived inside my heart. If ever there came a time somebody new stirred that fragile place, soothed its damaged surface, I’d have to make room. It was unlikely such a thing would happen anytime soon, if ever. Some people only ever found one great love in their lives.

In the store, I noticed how West warily searched around the aisles, and it finally occurred to me that he was in close proximity to the neighborhood he used to live in with Michael. Shit.

“Did you and Michael ever grocery-shop here?” I asked him near the seafood counter.

“No,” he replied, his gaze shifting over my shoulder. “But
